Having just got back from Labelexpo Europe one of the striking things we kept seeing was hybrid UV curing systems. And it got us thinking about the future of curing technology. Which ties into our latest blog post, “Why Mercury UV Lamps Aren’t Going Anywhere Soon”. Where we dive into how mercury and LED technologies are working side by side to deliver optimal curing. If you’re an OEM, a print engineer or a press operator trying to future proof your UV strategy then this one’s for you. We’ve talked before about our legendary office tuck shop, but this year, the team’s taken Halloween very seriously. Decorations have started creeping in, and the place is slowly turning into a haunted snack heaven/hell. 👻 🦇 Some would say it's a bit early to do this, but we think it's OK if it keeps everyone happy... even if we did have to move the Christmas tree to make room for them! 🎄 🤦

It’s easy to post for #WorldMentalHealthDay. But it’s harder to talk about the real weight behind the words. This year’s theme, Mental Health in Humanitarian Emergencies reminds us that mental health isn’t just a workplace wellness perk. It’s survival. In times of crisis - war, natural disaster, displacement - mental wounds are often the deepest and least visible. 1 in 5 people in conflict zones will develop a mental health condition. Almost all will suffer in silence. To everyone living through crisis, carrying invisible burdens, or just getting through today, we see you. #MentalHealthInEmergencies #WorldMentalHealthDay2025 #YouAreNotAlone #HumanBeforeWork #TogetherWeHeal

Back from Labelexpo Europe 2025... and still processing everything we learned in Barcelona. Our team spent four packed days visiting stands, meeting partners, and seeing UV curing systems in action. One clear takeaway: Mercury UV curing remains essential to performance-led applications. While LED hogs the headlines, it’s not a one-tech-fits-all world and mercury and hybrid systems remain central to label curing, and our lamps continue to play a vital role in getting curing right. We also had the pleasure of reconnecting with customers and distributors from across the world. The conversations were insightful. The relationships? Even more valuable. 🙏 Thanks to all who took the time to talk. Not all industrial lamps are created equal and that’s a good thing! Depending on your application, choosing the right lamp technology can boost efficiency, performance, and reliability. Here’s a quick breakdown of four common types of UV lamps in use for curing applications: 🔵 Medium-Pressure UV Lamps The all-rounder. Perfect for curing, coating, and bonding. Delivers high intensity UV over a broad spectrum. Favoured for printing, packaging, and surface finishing. ☀️ High-Pressure UV Lamps Think power in a small package. Higher intensity and smaller form factor. Ideal when space is tight and fast curing is key. 🔴 Infrared (IR) Lamps Focused on heat, not UV. Best for drying, heating, and thermoforming. Great in plastics, automotive, and textiles. ⚡ Microwave UV Lamps No electrodes, longer lifespan. Ideal for continuous production lines. Low maintenance, consistent output. Each lamp has its place. The magic happens when you match the right light to the right job. Need help choosing the best fit? We’re here when you’re ready. #UVTechnology #PrintingIndustry #Manufacturing #Engineering #CuringSolutions #AlphaCure #IndustrialLamps #SurfaceFinishing #PackagingTech

What? Quartz plates are positioned between the Ultraviolet (UV) lamp and the substrate to block infrared (IR) radiation while permitting the passage of UV radiation. Why? Excessive IR radiation can lead to elevated temperatures within the apparatus, potentially harming the substrate or components of your UV system – costing your business time and money. The presence of quartz plates guarantees the maintenance of the appropriate temperature levels. However, for this to be achieved, the plates themselves require cleaning - our video below shows you how. Alpha-Cure is proud to supply quartz plates manufactured from high-grade quartz, which provides maximum UV transmission. Guess what? Researchers at UCL have made an incredible discovery about reindeer! These amazing creatures cannot only see ultraviolet (UV) light 🟣, but it's also super essential for their survival in the freezing Arctic ❄️ Imagine seeing things that are invisible to us, like UV light. Well, that's exactly what reindeer can do! This unique vision helps them gather crucial information that keeps them from starving, falling prey to predators, or getting into conflicts over territory. It's like having a secret superpower! Recent research findings using cameras that can detect UV light noticed a vital observation; some essential things absorb UV light (appearing black that contrasts with snow): 1️⃣ Urine - A sign of predators or competitors 2️⃣ Lichens - A significant food source in winter 3️⃣ Fur - Making predators such as wolves are very easy to see (despite being camouflaged from other animals that can't see UV) Unfortunately, we humans and most other mammals can't see UV light because our lenses don't let it through to our eyes. But hey, at least we can still appreciate how awesome reindeer are! 🦌 #didyouknow #dyk #UVFunFact #reindeer #uvtechnology #uv #uvlamp #uvlight #UVLamps #UVLighting #UVglow #funfact #fact #trivia

Did you know: #funfact Ultraviolet (UV) light plays a crucial role in the production of your favourite cider 🍎 By treating cider with UV light, microbial pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and fungi are effectively eliminated by disrupting their DNA and preventing them from reproducing. UV treatment is preferred in the beverage industry because it provides a natural and non-chemical way to control microbes. An ultraviolet solution for cider production aligns perfectly with consumer demand for minimally processed products while preserving the authentic taste, aroma, and colour of the cider we all love. So, when you're enjoying a refreshing glass of cider this summer, rest assured that UV treatment has helped ensure its safety and quality! 🌞🍻 #didyouknow #dyk #uv #uvlight #cider #UVFunFact #beverage #cider #craftcider #ciderlover #beverageindustry #food #drink #drinks

With DJ Carl keeping us entertained with music and lighting, we all tucked into some sensational burgers and fries from @wwilsonsstreetfoodltd, and a sweet treat for afters from The Ice Cream Centre, both of which we thank for keeping us well-fed 😋 We were delighted to have Hayley, from our chosen charity, @harrys_pals_charity join us for a meet and greet. Our charity raffle raised a total of £406! A fantastic amount, which will go towards making a difference by providing emotional support to parents of severely ill or disabled children. Did you know: #funfact All scorpions are fluorescent under ultraviolet light, whether that be an electrical black light/lamp or natural moonlight. HOW? From a substance found in a very thin, but super tough coating in their exoskeleton. Specific molecules in this layer absorb the longer wavelengths of ultraviolet light and emit them in different wavelengths, visible at night and in the right conditions as a blue-green glow. WHY? Still, scientists don’t know what purpose the fluorescence serves. But some theories range from: • It protects scorpions from sunlight. • It helps them find each other. • It might confuse their prey. Scorpions may use their whole bodies as light-detection devices, converting ultraviolet light to a blue-green glow and transmitting this signal to the nervous system. In theory, this would help a scorpion hide better at night. Whatever the reason, the advantage of this fascinating trait to humans is that it makes these lethal arachnids easy to spot in the dark if you’re (most likely) trying to avoid them! #didyouknow #dyk #uv #uvlight #nature #flourescentlight #UVFunFact #scorpion

Did you know: #funfact Bees see the world much differently than humans and can see ultraviolet light! This isn’t just because of their size, but because they can see a different part of the light spectrum to us. Humans are trichromatic; bees are thought to ‘bee’ too, but cannot see red because they have no photoreceptor for it. They can see the ultraviolet (UV) end of the light spectrum, and so they make colour combinations from blue, green and ultraviolet. As a result, flowers can look very different to bees, and many have indications on their petals, known as nectar guides which are only visible through UV light. Ultraviolet light is a tool for them to ensure bees can find the pollen and nectar they require for food and spread pollen, continuing the survival of plants and, thus, the planet and humans. #didyouknow #dyk #uv #uvlight #nature #flourescentlight #UVFunFact #bees #savethebees #nature

It is World Oceans Day! Our sister brand, @alphapurifyuv, provide high-quality ultraviolet lamps for disinfection and purification systems for industrial applications in the marine and aquaculture sectors. So today we’re highlighting the many ways @AlphaPurifyuv lamps positively contribute to ocean life: Deactivating Harmful Microorganisms: When applied in water treatment systems, UV lamps can help eliminate pathogens that can pose risks to marine life and human health contributing to maintaining a healthier and safer marine ecosystem. Controlling Algal Blooms: Some algal blooms produce toxins, harmful to marine life, fish, shellfish, and coral reefs. UV-based purification systems can be utilised to control algal blooms by disrupting the growth and reproductive cycles. Reducing Chemical Usage: Traditional water treatment methods often involve the use of chemical disinfectants, such as chlorine, to eliminate microorganisms. These types of chemicals can have adverse effects on marine ecosystems when discharged into the ocean. Ultraviolet-based purification systems provide an alternative, chemical-free method for disinfection. Preventing the Spread of Invasive Species: Ballast water is often used by ships for stability during voyages, and it can contain various organisms, including invasive species. When ballast water is discharged into the ocean, these species can be introduced to new ecosystems, causing ecological imbalances and damage to native species. UV lamp-based purification systems treat ballast water, effectively deactivating organisms present in the water. This protects the biodiversity of marine habitats. View their products and learn more about how their lamps are used in various disinfection and purification industry applications - https://ow.ly/F1gg50OJhOB #worldoceanday #oceanlovers #oceanplastic #marinedebris #oceancreatures #protecttheocean #saveouroceans #worldoceansday #protectouroceans #uvlamps #uvlight #uvdisinfection #uvpurification #aquaculture #marinelife #marine #climatecrisis

Reflecting on Reflectors - What and why? Coated Quartz - 3 of 3 Reflectors are a critical element of many UV curing systems, responsible for 50–70% of the UV output that reaches the substrate. A cleaning/maintenance schedule will ensure your UV system reflectors stay in the best possible shape, even for coated quartz, which is stronger than glass! Alpha-Cure supplies high-quality reflectors to fit virtually any UV curing system worldwide! #UVlamps #reflectors #coatedquartz #quartz #ultravioletlight #lamps #strongerthanglass

There are common issues that can cause a UV lamp to stop curing within a UV system, decreasing the intensity of the UV light and rendering the UV system ineffective. Mirror Coating is one of those issues, an effect of over-cooling and results in a combination of tungsten from the electrode and mercury condensing onto the inside of the lamp ends, giving it a mirror-coated effect. You can take specific prevention measures including: • Order your lamps from Alpha-Cure! Our UV lamp ends are coated with heat-reflective materials such as; gold, platinum, silver & white paint to keep the lamp shoulders hot. Contrary to popular belief, white paint is the best reflective coating to retain heat within the lamp • The system is producing too much cool air that isn’t being properly circulated evenly along the length of the lamp. Remember to keep the lamp shoulder temperature above 600 °C, (1,112°F) • If the UV lamp is not running at the correct power for prolonged periods, UV lamp operators should seek professional advice in this instance. What 5 things should you be doing to prolong the life of your UV lamp? 1. Always wear latex gloves when unpacking and then handling a UV lamp, as any residue and oil from your fingertips will contaminate the surface of the lamp and cause issues once it is ignited. 2. Before placing the lamp into the UV system, ensure you clean the lamp body with isopropanol-based wipes. 3. For longer lamps, rotate them every 100-200 hours to avoid deformation of the quartz and ‘bowing’. 4. Avoid excessive starts – this can cause contamination due to the electrodes throwing off tungsten into the lamp. When you remove the UV lamp from the system, check that the electrical connections are tight and not eroded. 5. Ensure the UV system is clear of all external contamination, such as inks and paper dust, and clean the lamps regularly with isopropyl wipes. Allow the lamp to cool for at least 5 minutes after the power has been turned off before you handle the lamp. #lamplife #uvhintsandtips
